Joshimath sank 5.4 cm ISRO report rehabilitation compensation. On January 14, Indian Space Research Organization shared a report which showed that Uttrakhand’s Joshimath is sinking rapidly by 5.4 cm in just 12 days. The ISRO found that the sinking rate was lower in the previous months. The sinking rate between April and November was 9 cm. ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre shows that Joshimath sank 5.4 cm between December 27, 2022, and January 8, 2023. After a Satellite Survey, approximately 4000 people have been moved to relief camps.
Joshimath is a gateway to popular pilgrimage sites like Badrinath and Sikh holy temple Hemkund Sahib. The roads and buildings to Badrinath have cracks that are widening day by day.
A 47-year-old warning was ignored!
As per Mishra Commission Report, 1976, claimed that big construction plans have to be stopped to save Joshimath. Since the Uttrakhand governments ignored the warning the town sank rapidly.
What caused the rapid sinking of Joshimath?
Residents and experts said that the crisis occurred due to hydropower plants, blasts, and drilling in the mountains.
Unplanned and disordered infrastructural projects led to the crisis.
Resentment in people
People are crying because they have to leave their homes and property. They are saying that due to the irresponsibility of governments, this crisis happened. They are protesting because no rehabilitation plan has been shared by the government.
In spite of the crisis, a stone-crushing machine was working at night. (shown in a video shared by NDTV).
4000/- amount is fixed by the government to be given to people who will migrate from the town to safe places but the amount is not enough for a person to lead their life ahead.
Current activities in the town
Chief Minister of Uttrakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami held a meeting with experts and locals. He said that compensation will be paid to the victims. The committee will decide the compensation rate. Additionally, he said that 1.5 lakhs will be provided to each family as of now (merely a temporary measure).
The Uttrakhand High Court asked the government to implement a strict ban on construction.
The government has begun demolishing unsafe buildings in the town.
4000/- per month to be paid to each one, however, the amount is very low.
Avimukteshwanand Saraswati Shankaracharya filed a petition in the Supreme Court which will be heard on January 16.
