Scotland free menstrual products Period Products Act. On August 16, the Scottish government enforced Period Products Act on Monday. Which gives the right to everyone to get free menstrual products. The government claimed that it became the first country in the world that legally protects the right to access free menstrual products such as tampons, sanitary napkins, etc. Scottish Social Justice Secretary Shona Robison said, “Providing access to free period products is fundamental to equality and removes financial barriers to accessing them.”
Scottish Parliament lawmaker Monica Lennon campaigned against *“Period Poverty” and introduced the Period Products bill which was unanimously passed in 2020. She tweeted that although they are the first but will not be the last. Australia, New York, New Zealand, South Korea, and Virginia are also taking similar approaches.
Free period products will be available at educational institutions
As per the new law, local governing bodies, schools, colleges, and universities must keep a range of period products available for free in their washrooms. Though, the Scottish government has been investing a lot of money to fund free period products in all educational institutions since 2017, however, the law makes it a legal requirement.
An App launched to find the nearest collection point
A social enterprise named- “Hey Girls” launched an app to find the nearest collection point. This app will help girls to find the period products from local libraries, and/or community centers as well.
An immense number of girls/women were not able to buy period products due to the cost of living crisis. This assistance will really be advantageous for women’s empowerment.
