On July 23, the Director-General of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has declared monkeypox as a “global emergency.” He tweeted, ” in the light of evolving monkeypox outbreak with over 16000 reported cases from 75 countries & territories, I reconvened the the emergency committee. Based on the Intl. Health Regulations criteria, I decided to declare this outbreak a Public Health Emergency of Intl. Concern.”
Temporary recommendations to stop Monkeypox
WHO Director-General Tedros shared recommendations to stop the transmission of monkeypox.
- It is asked to activate and establish health sector to strongly respond to the spread of disease.
- One should avoid discrimination against people who are affected by monkeypox.
- Establish epidemiological disease surveillance which includes affordable diagnostic tests.
- Detection capacity could be increased by raising more and more awareness and training health workers.
- Awareness must be raised about the virus transmission, symptoms, signs, and protective measures.
